BSL-N6 Brass Conical Pneumatic Exhaust Muffler - 3/4 NPT

The BSL-N6 uses a brass threaded base and a conical, porous sintered-bronze element to diffuse air leaving pneumatic valves. Installed at a suitable exhaust port, it helps reduce the sharp noise produced when a pneumatic cylinder or actuator vents compressed air. This model has a 3/4 NPT connection.

Why Install a Silencer on a Pneumatic Valve?

When a cylinder moves, air displaced from the opposite chamber is usually vented through the directional valve. That fast release can produce a repeated, sharp exhaust sound, especially on high-cycle machinery. A muffler installed in the valve's exhaust port disperses the jet through its porous element rather than allowing it to discharge directly to atmosphere.

On many five-port directional valves, ports 3 and 5 are exhaust ports. Check the valve schematic and actual port markings; exhaust arrangements vary.

Why a Conical Sintered-Bronze Element?

For a given base diameter, a cone can expose more porous surface than a flat disc. That extra surface gives the exhausting air more area through which to disperse while helping attenuate noise.

Conical geometry does not eliminate flow resistance. Pore size, contamination and actual exhaust flow determine the resulting backpressure; an undersized or blocked silencer can slow a cylinder.

Why a Brass Threaded Base?

Brass is machinable and provides a robust threaded connection. When installed into an aluminum valve body, a brass fitting avoids aluminum-on-aluminum thread contact, which can be susceptible to adhesive galling. It does not eliminate the possibility of corrosion, thread damage or seizure.

Use the correct mating thread and the manufacturer-recommended tightening method. A muffler is a noise-control device, not a substitute for a flow-control valve or a safety pressure-relief device.

Typical Applications

  • Exhaust ports on compatible pneumatic directional control valves
  • Pneumatic cylinders and automated machinery with frequent exhaust cycles
  • Compressed-air control panels where the exhaust is discharged to atmosphere

Selection and installation: Confirm thread compatibility and air-exhaust flow before installation. Keep the sintered element clean; excessive restriction may alter actuator speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why fit a muffler to a pneumatic valve?

A pneumatic cylinder typically exhausts air through the valve as it moves. The muffler spreads that discharge through a porous element to reduce the sudden exhaust noise.

Why is the silencing element conical?

The cone exposes additional porous area compared with a small flat surface of similar base diameter. This can help air discharge while suppressing noise, but actual backpressure still depends on flow and condition.

Why use brass rather than an aluminum threaded body?

Brass is a practical machined fitting material and avoids aluminum-on-aluminum threaded contact in aluminum valves. Correct installation is still important, and dissimilar-metal corrosion can occur in damp environments.

Can this silencer affect cylinder speed?

Yes. Too little silencer flow capacity, or a clogged element, increases exhaust backpressure and can slow the actuator. Inspect and replace a restricted muffler.

Does this model adjust cylinder speed?

No. It is a fixed silencer. For intentional exhaust-flow adjustment use an appropriate silencer-throttle or pneumatic flow-control device.

Will this connection fit my pneumatic valve?

The catalogue identifies this version as 3/4 NPT. Match the exact port thread before ordering; NPT and G/BSPP threads are not interchangeable.
