BESL-03 Brass Adjustable Pneumatic Silencer-Throttle - 3/8 NPT

The BESL-03 combines a brass exhaust muffler with an adjustable restriction for a 3/8 NPT pneumatic valve port. Unlike a fixed silencer, it allows the rate of air leaving the valve to be changed, which can help set pneumatic cylinder travel speed while also reducing exhaust noise.

Why Use a Silencer-Throttle?

A conventional exhaust muffler is intended mainly to reduce noise. A silencer-throttle adds an adjustable restriction so the exhaust rate can be tuned where a directional control valve vents compressed air.

When the cylinder chamber cannot discharge as quickly, the resulting exhaust backpressure can reduce actuator travel speed. This is useful when commissioning or fine-tuning suitable pneumatic motions, but excessive restriction may cause sluggish or inconsistent operation.

How Does Exhaust Adjustment Affect Cylinder Motion?

On a double-acting cylinder, one chamber is pressurized while the other is exhausted. Depending on the valve and plumbing, restricting one exhaust outlet may affect one stroke differently from the other. A five-port valve often has separate exhaust outlets, typically ports 3 and 5.

Make adjustments incrementally with the machine in a safe condition. Cylinder load, supply pressure, cushioning and seal friction all affect the resulting motion; a silencer-throttle is not a pressure regulator.

Why a Brass Threaded Body?

Brass provides a practical machined threaded connection. Used with an aluminum valve housing, it avoids aluminum-on-aluminum thread contact, which can be prone to galling, although correct tightening and environmental compatibility still matter.

This 3/8 NPT version must match the actual exhaust-port thread. Select the port size and flow capacity for the intended actuator speed.

Typical Applications

  • Cylinder exhaust-speed adjustment during machine setup
  • Directional valve exhaust ports that require both silencing and throttling
  • Compact pneumatic control assemblies where a separate exhaust flow-control fitting is impractical

Selection and installation: Adjust gradually and test actuator movement in a safe operating state. Excessive exhaust restriction can cause unintended slow or inconsistent motion. The original product data lists a 300 psi maximum pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a silencer-throttle different from a fixed muffler?

A fixed muffler primarily diffuses exhaust to lower noise. A silencer-throttle also provides an adjustable flow restriction to influence how quickly a pneumatic actuator moves.

Can adjusting this fitting slow a pneumatic cylinder?

Yes. Restricting the exhaust can increase backpressure in the chamber being emptied and slow cylinder movement. Results depend on load, plumbing and the rest of the control circuit.

Does it regulate supply pressure?

No. It changes exhaust flow, not the regulated supply pressure. Use a dedicated pressure regulator to control supply pressure.

Why might two exhaust ports need separate adjustment?

Many five-port valves have separate exhaust passages for opposite cylinder strokes. Their effects depend on valve design and the cylinder circuit; adjust and test each side as necessary.

What should be checked during installation?

Match the 3/8 NPT exhaust-port thread, provide sufficient exhaust capacity and verify machine operation after each adjustment.
