ALS-04 High-Flow Aluminum Pneumatic Muffler - 1/2 NPT

The ALS-04 is an aluminum-body pneumatic exhaust muffler with a 1/2 NPT connection and stainless-steel mesh silencing media. It is installed at an exhaust port to spread the flow of air leaving a pneumatic control valve, reducing the abrupt discharge noise without intentionally throttling the cylinder. It is a fixed exhaust silencer rather than an adjustable speed control.

Why Use an Exhaust Muffler on a Pneumatic Valve?

As a pneumatic cylinder extends or retracts, the air displaced from the opposite chamber returns through the directional control valve and is released to atmosphere. The sudden exhaust can be loud, especially on machines cycling repeatedly.

The mesh element breaks up the concentrated exhaust stream into many smaller passages, reducing the sharp sound near the valve. This can improve the working environment without requiring a separate remote exhaust line.

Why Aluminum and Stainless-Steel Mesh?

The aluminum body keeps the assembly relatively light and provides a practical threaded housing. Stainless-steel mesh provides multiple paths for the exhausting air and a durable silencing medium.

A muffler described as high flow is not automatically unrestricted. Confirm capacity against the valve and cylinder, and remember that accumulated oil, dirt or moisture can progressively increase exhaust backpressure.

Choosing the Correct Connection and Flow Capacity

The ALS-04 is specified with a 1/2 NPT connection. Match the port thread exactly and confirm enough exhaust flow for the required cylinder speed. A muffler that is too restrictive can increase backpressure and extend machine cycle time.

The stated maximum pressure is a catalogue rating, not an exhaust-flow rating. It does not establish the permissible flow or guaranteed noise reduction for a particular machine.

Typical Applications

  • Pneumatic directional-control valve exhausts
  • Industrial cylinders and air-operated actuators
  • High-cycle machine automation requiring local exhaust noise reduction

Selection and installation: The original product data lists 300 psi maximum pressure. Confirm operating conditions, thread fit and exhaust-flow capacity before installation; never use pressure rating alone to size a muffler.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does exhaust air from a cylinder make noise?

Discharged compressed air expands rapidly as it leaves the valve. The muffler spreads the jet through mesh passages so the exhaust is less abrupt.

What is the advantage of a stainless-steel mesh muffler?

The mesh provides many small flow passages within a durable metal medium. Actual performance still depends on the amount of media, flow rate and cleanliness.

Does high-flow mean there is no backpressure?

No. All mufflers create some resistance, and a clogged unit can create excessive restriction. Size the exhaust path for the required cylinder movement.

Is this an adjustable cylinder speed controller?

No. This model is a fixed muffler. Use an appropriately sized flow-control valve or silencer-throttle if cylinder speed must be adjusted.

What thread is used on this model?

The catalogue lists 1/2 NPT. Match that thread to the valve exhaust port; NPT and BSPP/G connections are not interchangeable.
