60mm EPDM Closed-Cell Foam Vacuum Cup Seal

This compact 60mm EPDM closed-cell foam vacuum cup seal is designed for precision handling of smaller, irregular and textured parts. The compressible foam conforms to minor surface variations that can prevent conventional rubber suction cups from establishing a dependable vacuum seal.

Typical applications include stone tiles, wood offcuts, brick samples, embossed components, small rough-sawn parts and other uneven workpieces handled by automated or manually operated vacuum lifting systems.

This page includes calculated theoretical lifting force at 80% vacuum in metric units and 24"Hg in imperial units.

Estimated Theoretical Lifting Force

The lifting force is calculated using the full nominal 60mm circular sealing area. The metric calculation uses 80% vacuum, while the imperial calculation uses 24"Hg. At sea level, 24"Hg produces an effective pressure differential of approximately 11.76 PSI.

28.27cm² Nominal Metric Area
4.38in² Nominal Imperial Area
22.6kg Metric Lift at 80% Vacuum
51.5lb Imperial Lift at 24"Hg

Lifting Force Calculation

Calculation Step Metric Imperial
Nominal Diameter 60mm / 6cm 2.362"
Nominal Radius 3cm 1.181"
Nominal Area π × 3² = 28.27cm² π × 1.181² = 4.38in²
Vacuum Level 80% vacuum 24"Hg
Effective Pressure Approximately 0.8kg per cm² 14.7 PSI × 0.8 = 11.76 PSI
Estimated Theoretical Lift 28.27 × 0.8 = 22.6kg 4.38 × 11.76 = 51.5lb

Important: The calculated lifting force is theoretical and assumes that the complete nominal 60mm circular area is exposed to vacuum. The actual effective vacuum area may be smaller depending on the seal profile, mounting plate and internal opening.

An appropriate engineering safety factor must always be applied. Actual lifting capacity depends on surface texture, air leakage, seal compression, vacuum flow, load orientation, acceleration and operating conditions.

Typical Applications

  • Stone tiles and small textured stone products
  • Wood offcuts and rough-sawn components
  • Brick samples and small masonry parts
  • Embossed or patterned components
  • Small diamond-plate sections
  • Irregular construction material samples
  • Precision robotic pick-and-place systems
  • Manual vacuum handling tools

Why Use a 60mm Closed-Cell Foam Vacuum Seal?

The compact 60mm diameter is suited to smaller workpieces and applications where placement accuracy is important. The foam compresses around grooves, raised patterns and minor surface irregularities that can cause leakage with a conventional rubber suction cup.

Closed-cell EPDM foam helps restrict air movement through the seal material while providing the flexibility needed to establish contact on rough, coarse and embossed surfaces.

Foam seals are selected primarily for rough and uneven surfaces rather than simply because a workpiece is porous. Porous materials may require a higher-flow vacuum source to compensate for air leakage through the product.

EPDM Foam Material Information

EPDM closed-cell foam rubber provides flexibility, resilience and compressibility for vacuum handling applications involving small, irregular workpieces. Its compliant construction allows the seal to adapt to changing surface heights and textured product profiles.

Material compatibility should be confirmed before exposure to oils, chemicals, elevated temperatures or specialized production environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What surfaces is this 60mm EPDM foam seal designed for?

It is designed for smaller rough, textured and uneven workpieces such as stone tiles, wood offcuts, brick samples, embossed components and small patterned surfaces.

How much can the 60mm foam vacuum seal lift?

Using the full nominal 60mm circular area, the calculated theoretical lifting force is approximately 22.6kg at 80% vacuum or 51.5lb at 24"Hg. These figures are not safe working load ratings.

How is the metric lifting force calculated?

A 60mm diameter equals 6cm and has a nominal circular area of approximately 28.27cm². At 80% vacuum, the theoretical force is 28.27 × 0.8, which equals approximately 22.6kg.

How is the imperial lifting force calculated?

The 60mm diameter equals approximately 2.362 inches, producing a nominal area of 4.38 square inches. At 24"Hg, the effective pressure is approximately 11.76 PSI. Therefore, 4.38 × 11.76 provides a theoretical force of approximately 51.5lb.

Can this foam seal handle porous materials?

The seal is primarily intended to conform to rough and uneven surfaces. Some porous workpieces may be handled, but this depends on the vacuum source providing enough airflow to compensate for leakage through the material. Application testing is required.

Why could the actual lifting force be lower than the calculated value?

Actual force may be reduced by the internal vacuum opening, surface leakage, incomplete seal compression, contamination, acceleration, side loading, vacuum losses and variations in operating altitude.

Does a safety factor need to be applied?

Yes. The stated lifting figures are theoretical. An appropriate engineering safety factor must be applied based on load orientation, acceleration, surface condition, leakage, vacuum level and the risk of injury or product damage.

Is this a complete vacuum cup assembly?

This product is an EPDM foam replacement seal. The compatible vacuum cup body, backing plate, fitting or complete vacuum assembly may be supplied separately unless specifically included in the product listing.
